We are seeking feedback from the regional and commercial aviation industry on the proposed Temporary Restricted Area (TRA) to support military operations in the Woomera Prohibited Area (WPA).

    The issue

The key issues surrounding this proposed TRA are that:

    • defence activity requires use of airspace adjacent to the extant Woomera Restricted Areas (WRX)
    • the TRA is proposed to extend the WRX to maintain the safety of civil airspace users
    • the TRA will be activated simultaneously with the WRX for a 4-6 hour period, on a limited number of occasions in late November/December 2023
    • the TRA is planned to be activated in the afternoon/evening
    • when active but not in use, the TRA may be released to Melbourne Centre to allow civil aircraft transit.

    Purpose

Defence will be conducting activities within the WPA/WRX over the period 06 Dec - 17 Dec 2023 that will require a TRA.

TRA-Woomera will be activated by NOTAM for a 4-6 hour window. The activation period is intended for late afternoon/night. The TRA will only be activated in conjunction with extant WRX over the two-week period.

When active but not in use, Defence may release the TRA to Melbourne Centre to allow transit of civilian flights. The TRA will be resumed from Melbourne Centre for the required activity once all civil aircraft are clear.

The TRA extends from the surface up to FL245 and access to the following airfields will be affected:

    • North Well
    • Kingoonya

The TRA affects no new air routes which are not already affected by WRX activation.
