Multiple Temporary Restricted Areas (TRAs) to be established at Surfers Paradise Beach for Pacific Airshow Gold Coast

    The issue

    • TRAs to separate display aircraft from transiting aircraft
    • TRAs will only be activated during practice and display times
    • operations at Gold Coast Airport (YBCG), Southport Aerodrome (YSPT) and Sea World Heliport (YSWD) will be impacted
    • there may also be minimal impact on operations into Brisbane Airport (YBBN).

    Purpose

Multiple TRAs are proposed in the vicinity of Surfers Paradise Beach for the inaugural Pacific Airshow Gold Coast to ensure safe separation of display aircraft from any transiting/local traffic. The TRAs will only be activated during practice and display times.

Details of the proposed TRAs, as well as illustrations, are provided below (note that these are subject to change, refer to NOTAMs and Aeronautical Information Package Supplement (AIP SUP) for finalised dimensions). The TRAs will extend at most 5 nautical miles (n mile) from the waterfront of Surfers Paradise Beach, over both water and land. The proposed TRAs are centred at Cavill Avenue (280006S 1532617E) with a maximum upper limit of FL160.

The TRAs will only be activated during practice and display times as follows (subject to change, refer to NOTAMs for finalised timings):

    • practice - Thursday 17 August 1100-1600 Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST)
    • displays - Friday 18 August, Saturday 19 August, and Sunday 20 August 1000-1600 AEST each day.

A UNICOM will operate on 119.0MHz (local Common Traffic Advisory Frequency) during TRA activation periods, including buffer periods before and after the activation times to assist in traffic separation. An Airservices representative will also be on-site during TRA activation periods. Priority will be given to passenger transport operations, as well as to any aircraft with a declared emergency or operating in the preservation of life or property (medivac, fire and flood recovery, police, search and rescue). Full details of arrangements and procedures will be published in AIP SUP prior to the event.

Pacific Airshow is being operated in coordination with the City of Gold Coast, Major Events Gold Coast, Destination Gold Coast, Tourism and Events Queensland, the Queensland government, and Australian Defence, and in accordance with the Queensland Major Events Act.
