To change Curtin control zone (CTR) airspace status from CTR to RA2 and to replace R801 with segregated airspace volumes that better reflect Defence usage.

    The issue

    • Change Curtin CTR airspace status from CTR to RA2.
    • Replace R801 with segregated airspace volumes that better reflect Defence usage and provide airspace efficiencies.

This proposal is being developed for inclusion in AIRAC 2512 publication 27 November 2025. Activations of Curtin airspace to support military exercises in Northern Australia in 2025 will be as per the AVSEF consultation currently open on the AVSEF Forum.

    Purpose

To amend airspace in the immediate vicinity of Curtin aerodrome to achieve airspace efficiencies.

    Proposal

The proposal to change the status of Curtin CTR to RA2 will enable Defence to use the Defence aerodrome more effectively for a variety of Defence flying platforms. The change of status also enables Defence to provide scalable airspace management procedures, dependant on activities, including a Class D service when required. The lateral and vertical dimensions will remain unchanged. The change of airspace status is not expected to have any discernible impact to civil operators.

The proposal to disestablish R801 and replace with segregated airspace volumes will enable Defence to activate only those portions of airspace required for proposed activities. Defence currently partially activates R801 or applies for TRA when operating out of Curtin aerodrome to ensure civil operators are provided access to Derby aerodrome. The new divisions of airspace proposed will enable Defence to continue to provide these efficiencies but as a permanent solution which is available on aeronautical charts. The following key aspects are noted (airspace depiction below):

    1. R801 lateral boundary split between north and south (resulting in two RA) following principles utilised in recent years to allow scalable activation providing improved airspace efficiencies in and around Derby.
    2. Lower vertical limit raised to A015 to enable improved access to civil operators involved in helicopter muster operations and access to Derby.
    3. DXXXA established and always activated coincidentally with RXXXA to provide situational awareness to civil operators that Defence activities are occurring and increased military flying activity can be expected in the airspace.
    4. DXXXB established and only activated if Defence activities are expected to occur below A020 to provide situational awareness that increased military flying activity can be expected in the airspace.
