National meteorological data collection pilot utilising long-duration multi-sounding light unmanned free balloons.

    The issue

We are working to set up operations where long duration (average 5-day lifetime) light unmanned free balloons (maximum weight 1.2 kilograms on launch, reducing to 150 grams throughout their lifetime), would be used to collect meteorological data throughout the Australian continent.

These balloons would be launched from North Dandalup, Western Australia, floating generally eastbound, with the intention to treat it as an initial 3-month pilot, due to commence the last week of March 2025, with the intention to launch five balloons per week.

These balloons are expected to reach a ceiling of 9 kilometres on initial ascent with a maximum final ceiling of 18 kilometres at the end of its life after it has decreased its amount of lifting gas (hydrogen) while taking soundings.

Operations are pending approval from CASA and the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), in partnership with the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, where all data collected is delivered to their organisation.

    Purpose

The purpose of this consultation is to inform the greater community of a planned pilot program to collect atmospheric meteorological data using long duration weather balloon launched from Western Australia. This feedback is being sought as a part of the CASA approval process for the operations.
