From 30 November 2023, forecasts of weather in TAF will be for the area at the aerodrome within a radius of 8 km of the aerodrome reference point.

    Purpose

From 30 November 2023, forecasts of weather in TAF will be for the area at the aerodrome within a radius of 8 km of the aerodrome reference point.

In Australia, present weather information in Aerodrome Weather Reports (METAR/SPECI) is representative of the aerodrome (i.e. the area within a radius of 8 km of the aerodrome reference point), and for certain specified present weather phenomena in its vicinity (i.e. the area that lies within a radius of approximately 8 km and 16 km of the aerodrome).

To align the area of coverage of the TAF with that of the METAR/SPECI, the TAF area of coverage is changing from an area of 5nm (approximately 9.26 km) radius to that with an 8 km radius.

This change, effective from 30 November 2023, allows the Bureau to align area of coverage of TAF to Internatioanl Civil Aviation Organisation requirements.
